INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
STANDARDS AND BENCHMARKS
(5-6)
STANDARD I. Performs on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
1.6.1. Performs on pitch, in rhythm, with appropriate dynamics and timbre, and maintains a steady tempo.
1.6.2 Performs simple rhythmic melodic, and chordal patterns accurately and independently on rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic classroom instruments (e.g., recorder-type instruments, percussion instruments, keyboard instruments, or electronic instruments).
1.6.3 Knows a varied repertoire of music representing diverse genres and styles.
1.6.4 Performs in groups (e.g., blends instrumental timbres, matches dynamic levels, responds to the cues of a conductor).
1.6.5 Performs independent instrumental parts (e.g., simple rhythmic or melodic ostinatos, contrasting rhythmic lines, harmonic progressions and chords) while others sing and play contrasting parts.
STANDARD II. Knows and applies appropriate criteria to music and music performances.
2.6.1 Knows music of various styles representing diverse cultures.
2.6.2 Knows appropriate terminology used to explain music, music notation, music instruments and voices, and music performances.
2.6.3 Identifies the sounds of a variety of instruments (e.g., orchestral, band, instruments, from various cultures).
STANDARD III. Understand the relationship between music and history and culture.
3.6.1 Identifies (by genre or style) music from various historical periods and cultures.
3.6.2 Knows how basic elements of music are used in music from various cultures of the world.
3.6.3 Understands the roles of musicians (e.g., orchestra conductor, folksinger, church organist) in various music settings and cultures.
STANDARD IV: Understand the relationship between music basics and quality music performance.
4.6.1 Understands how correct embouchure formation, posture, playing position, and musical breathing combine to create the qualities of a quality tone.
4.6.2 Knows the value of different kinds of notes and rests are able to play them correctly alone and in a group setting.
4.6.3 Develops an understanding of how proper instrumental maintenance and care will enhance the musical performance through quality instrumental conditions.

STANDARD I. Performs on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
1.8.1 Performs on an instrument (e.g., band or orchestra instrument, keyboard instrument, electronic instrument) accurately and independently, alone and in small and large ensembles, with good posture, good playing position, and good breath or stick control.
1.8.2 Performs with expression and technical accuracy on a wind, percussion, or other classroom instrument a repertoire of instrumental literature that may include modest ranges and changes of tempo, key, and meter.
1.8.3 Performs music representing diverse genres and cultures, with expression appropriate for the work being performed.
1.8.4 Plays by ear simple melodic (e.g. folksongs) on a melodic instrument and simple accompaniments (e.g., strummed I, IV, V, vi, ii chords) on a harmonic instrument.
STANDARD II. Knows and applies appropriate criteria to music and music performances.
2.8.1 Identifies specific music events (e.g., entry of oboe, change of meter, return of refrain) when listening to music.
2.8.2 Understands how the elements of music are used in various genres and cultures.
2.8.3 Understands the basic principles of meter, rhythm, tonality, intervals, chords, and harmonic progressions.
2.8.4 Knows criteria that effects the quality (e.g., use of elements to create unity, variety, tension/release, balance) and effectiveness (e.g., expressive impact) of music performance and compositions.
STANDARD III. Understand the relationship between music and history and culture.
3.8.1 Understands distinguishing characteristics (e.g., relating to instrumentation, texture, rhythmic qualities, melodic lines, form) of representative music genres and styles from a variety of cultures.
3.8.2 Understands characteristics that cause various musical works (e.g., from different genres, styles, historical periods, composers) to be considered exemplary.
3.8.3 Understands the functions music serves, role of musicians (e.g., lead guitarist in a rock band, composer of jingles for commercials, singer in Peking opera), and conditions under which music is typically performed in various cultures of the world.

STANDARD I. Performs on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
1.12.1 Performs a varied repertoire with expression (e.g., appropriate dynamics, phrasing, rubato) and technical accuracy a large and varied repertoire of instrumental literature at a moderate level of difficulty (e.g., attends to phrasing and interpretation, sightreading, performs various meters and rhythms in a variety of keys).
1.12.2 Uses ensemble skills (e.g., balance, intonation, rhythmic unity) when performing as part of a group.
STANDARD II. Knows and applies appropriate criteria to music and music performances.
2.12.1 Understands how the elements of music and expressive devices are used in music from diverse genres and cultures.
2.12.2 Understands the technical vocabulary of music (e.g., Italian terms, form, harmony, tempos, markings).
2.12.3 Understands compositional devices and techniques that are used to provide unity and variety and tension and release in a musical work (e.g., motives, imitation, retrograde, inversion).
2.12.4 Knows specific criteria that effect the quality and effectiveness of music performances, compositions, arrangements, and improvisations (e.g., consider questions of unity or variety, consistency, appropriate use of resources).
STANDARD III. Understand the relationship between music and history and culture.
3.12.1 Classifies unfamiliar but representative aural example of music (e.g., by genre, style, historical period, culture).
3.12.2 Knows sources of American music genres (e.g., swing Broadway musical, blues), the evolution of these genres and musicians associated with them.
3.12.3 Knows various roles that musicians perform (e.g., entertainer, teacher, transmitter, of cultural tradition) and representative individuals who have functioned in these roles.
