LINCOLN-DOUGLAS
DEBATE
On November 5, 2008, seven high school students participated in
rounds following the Lincoln-Douglas format for individual debate
on the topic Resolved: Lying is always wrong. In this format each
debater must participate in two separate rounds, presenting the
affirmative side once, and the negative position in a second
round.
The afternoon provided an opportunity for these students to learn
the steps in the debate process, and allowed some practice engaging
in one or more debate rounds. In some cases, the students watched
others complete a debate, and then volunteered to present in a
later round.
Emily C. Cram received recognition as the best-prepared speaker for
this debate. She earned winning scores from the three judges, Carol
Frahm, Carl Kueter, and Joan Greve, in both rounds. They heard
Emily debate the affirmative against Joe Kilburg’s negative
position, and the negative against Austin Shoemaker’s
affirmative.
Robert Merino took the positive position versus Jesseca Lathrop’s
negative. He received higher scores from two of the three
judges.
Tyler Mussmann argued the affirmative against Alexis Drury’s
negative position, gaining winning scores from the judges.
Judges scored the following: Analysis, Reasoning, Evidence,
Organization, Cross Examination, Refutation, Rebuttal, Elocution,
Delivery and Overall Presentation. Congratulations to all students
who took the challenge to debate!!
CLINTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE QUIZ BOWL
East Central has been invited to participate in the Academic
Pursuit Quiz Bowl to be held at CCC on Tuesday, December 2, 2008.
The competition will take place in the Graphic Arts Technology
Center, with teams from about twelve local high schools competing.
Six East Central students will be selected for the team from
preliminary rounds held during November. The final roster has not
been determined at the time of this printing. Mrs. Briegel serves
as the advisor for this activity, with Ms. Horst assisting in the
try-out rounds.
Season’s Greetings from the Desk of the Counselor…
The school year is flying by and the holidays are in full
swing, but we cannot forget some important items for the month of
December…
SENIORS
Stay focused! Grades in your senior year can affect your admittance
to the college of your choice.
PARENTS and STUDENTS - Save your year-end payroll stub if it shows
your earnings for the year. You may need it for estimating
information on the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student
Aid)
Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov to print a pre-application worksheet—DO NOT
use fafsa.com
Go to: www.pin.ed.gov to obtain a PIN for the student and at a
separate pin for at least one parent if the student is a
dependent.
THERE WILL BE A FINANCIAL AID PRESENTATION THURSDAY, JANUARY 8TH AT
THE HIGH SCHOOL AT 6:00 in the family consumer science room. This
information is presented by The College Planning Center and it’s
important to attend if your son/daughter will be attending college.
Students are encouraged to attend as well.
JUNIORS
Remember the next ACT test date is February 7th and the
registration deadline is January 6th. DO NOT wait until after the
holidays to get this lined up! By the time you get back from
vacation, it will be too late! Start thinking about getting out and
visiting a college or two.
SOPHOMORES AND FRESHMEN
If you find yourself having a little extra time over the holidays,
start looking up colleges and careers on the Internet, and use the
available resources we have in the media center. Your time for all
the serious decision-making is coming up soon and it can be a much
smoother process if you start early in your search!
MIDDLE SCHOOL
The middle school stepped up and raised money for the Jackson
County Humane Society during the month of November. We don’t have a
total as of press time, but we will be sure to let everyone know
how successful we were. Recently, middle school students were
educated by their student council on the effects of certain drugs
during Red Ribbon Week and students who were “BASICS-FREE” during
first quarter were recognized and rewarded. It was an opportunity
to talk about making good choices in and out of the classroom.
ELEMENTARY
The elementary students continue to talk about being kind to one
another and the importance of just basically being a good human
being. They are great at discussing, participating, and some even
act out situations out through role-playing! Oh, the drama! It’s
always so much fun working with these younger students. They have
great ideas and a lot of insight that we may not always recognize.
Have a great holiday break everyone!
