Each month a group of teachers will be included in the "Teacher Feature", discussing what books they are reading.
In the Middle School this month...
From Mrs. Gruhn
Deadville by Ron Koertge
A teenage boy visits the hospital of a girl in his class who
has had an accident and is in a coma. He talks to her,
telling her stuff he can't tell anyone else. He's pretty
much a social dropout, doing drugs, drinking, and "zoning
out", since his sister died in a similar way. Death is a
place called Deadville, and the main character struggles
trying to cope with his own grief in his dysfunctional home
and empty life. My interest was spurred because of Ms.
Horst. Every time we have an inservice in Miles, I scan her
library books. She recommended it. It is a great book, not
for the story so much as for the way it is written. A
short read, but powerful in message and language.
