Teacher Feature-January

January Teacher Feature is from...

Mrs. Petersen

I just finished reading The Weight of Silence by Heather Gudenkauf.

I was given the book by my daughter-in-law.  She had read it and she thought it might be something I would enjoy.  The author lives in Dubuque and there are references throughout the book to Iowa, which is something unique.

The story revolves around Callie, a little girl who is a selective mute.  She has a best friend named Petra who often speaks for her.  The girls disappear in the middle of the night and the story follows the search for them.  It is one of those books that is hard to put down, as you want to continue reading to find out who took the girls and if they are ok.  The writer tells the story through the eyes of various characters.  Other themes that come out in the story are small town life, and the effects of alcoholism on families.

I really enjoyed the book.  I like mysteries and found this one to be very believable, since the setting was Iowa.  I hope you will give it a try.
